Project details
Helix FMS was appointed by Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to carry out a comprehensive passive fire survey on the second floor of the Daisy Building (Block 91) at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham. The survey was part of an ongoing refurbishment project managed by Johnsons Construction, and focused specifically on the fire compartmentation walls within the designated refurbishment area.
Given the complexity of live hospital environments and the critical nature of passive fire safety in healthcare settings, our trained surveyors worked closely with the on-site management team to access and inspect all required areas with minimal disruption.
Across the surveyed area, 245 items were inspected. Helix FMS produced a detailed fire stopping report that included: A complete Passive Fire Register, before-and-after photography of all items, cross-referenced, marked-up floor plans showing all defect locations and recommendations for correct remedial works and materials.
Our report provided NHS Trust stakeholders and the refurbishment team with a clear roadmap for fire safety compliance. The findings highlighted both immediate fire risks and longer-term areas for improvement, supporting the hospital’s legal obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Healthcare environments require the highest standard of passive fire protection, not only to ensure compliance but to safeguard vulnerable patients, staff, and visitors. This project demonstrates Helix FMS’s expertise in working within live medical environments and our ability to deliver precise, actionable fire safety insights.
