Project details
Helix FMS was appointed to carry out a comprehensive passive fire stopping survey at Ward 29 of Castle Hill Hospital, a key part of Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s ongoing commitment to patient and staff safety.
The objective was to assess the integrity of the ward’s fire compartmentation strategy, identify areas of non-compliance, and provide the client with a detailed, actionable plan to restore full fire safety performance throughout the space. Using the fire strategy drawings provided, our certified passive fire surveyors conducted an inspection of the fire-resistant walls, risers, and ceiling voids within the ward.
The survey focused on assessing the condition and effectiveness of previously installed fire stopping materials and applications, identifying several areas requiring remediation.
The Helix FMS team operated under strict site induction protocols, ensuring compliance with hospital health and safety procedures. Each defect was photographed and logged, described in detail, cross-referenced against fire plans and drawings and categorised by severity and urgency. A full survey report was produced alongside a marked-up drawing set, clearly outlining all areas needing remedial attention.
On completion of the fire stopping works, all previously identified issues were fully remediated, certified, and signed off by our trained team. A final passive fire register was compiled, providing clear documentation for the client and forming part of the hospital’s formal compliance and asset management strategy.
This register also included practical recommendations for ongoing monitoring and future improvements. Compartmentation is a critical component of any hospital’s fire strategy, helping contain fire and smoke, safeguard evacuation routes, and protect vulnerable patients and essential assets.
By addressing non-compliance in Ward 29, Helix FMS has supported the Trust’s commitment to maintaining high-performing, legally compliant fire safety systems within its estate.
