Helix FMS was appointed by PSV Design to deliver a dual-package of fire safety upgrades at the prestigious JB Morrell Library as part of a wider refurbishment project at the University of York.
Our works focused on two essential areas of passive fire protection:
Installation of certified fire doors at the café’s main entrance
Survey and remediation of fire-rated walls across the building
Libraries and education facilities must meet strict fire safety legislation, given their high occupancy and the critical role they play in public services. Our team worked meticulously to ensure that all fire safety works aligned with regulatory standards, enhanced building integrity, and caused minimal disruption to the university’s operations.
Following an on-site induction, our fire door installers removed the existing doors and installed newly supplied CB Solutions fire doors into the existing openings. All works were documented in a detailed Fire Door Register.
Alongside fire door installation, Helix FMS also conducted a comprehensive passive fire survey on highlighted fire-rated walls throughout the building. Penetrations and wall breaches were addressed, with works including the sealing of cable trays, pipes, conduits, and wall voids to restore full compartmentation. The final deliverables included a fully auditable Passive Fire Register.
Helix FMS successfully delivered a comprehensive fire safety package, improving both compartmentation and fire escape integrity at the JB Morrell Library. The result: a compliant, protected public facility that now meets rigorous fire safety standards.
