Project details

Helix FMS was proud to deliver a sensitive and critical passive fire protection project within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hull’s Women & Children’s Hospital.

As part of a vital programme of upgrades led by Apelona, Glen Wilson and Helix CMS, this project required extreme care and precision while operating in a live hospital ward that cares for vulnerable newborns and their families.

The objective was clear: identify and resolve all fire safety risks without compromising patient care, safety, or hospital operations. The Helix FMS team conducted a full passive fire survey, initially and over several return visits, to assess the integrity of compartmentation and fire stopping throughout the NICU.

Each defect was documented with a written description and proposed action. All defects were addressed by our fully qualified installers using certified fire protection materials, restoring compliance and improving life safety throughout the ward.

Delivering work within a live NICU ward presented a unique set of challenges. Working discreetly around clinical teams in high-pressure, high-sensitivity settings. Avoiding any disruption to the care of premature and critically ill newborns. While maintaining the highest standards of safety, hygiene, and communication at all times.

Thanks to close collaboration with NHS management and ward staff, the Helix FMS team delivered the project safely, respectfully, and on schedule. The NICU is now fully compliant with passive fire protection regulations, with all risk areas addressed and recorded. The building now benefits from robust, certified fire compartmentation, offering greater peace of mind to staff, patients, and families.

This project stands as a strong example of our ability to deliver high-stakes fire protection works in the most complex and sensitive environments. When lives are at stake, every detail matters. This project reflects Helix FMS’s deep commitment to quality, care, and technical excellence - values we bring to every healthcare environment we support.
