Project details

Helix FMS was instructed by PSV Designs to support the Westfield Court kitchen refurbishment project at the University of Hull, delivering passive fire safety services to ensure the accommodation remained fully compliant throughout its upgrade.

Having previously worked with the University on other accommodation blocks, our team was proud to return and deliver another phase of critical fire safety work. This time, as part of a focused refurbishment in one of the university’s residential complexes.

Helix FMS was tasked with surveying all designated fire walls throughout the kitchen refurbishment areas of Westfield Court. The process included a full passive fire protection survey, identifying penetrations and weak points in compartmentation. Installation of certified fire-stopping materials to all defects identified, before-and-after photo documentation of each penetration and a compilation of a full Passive Fire Register and cross-referenced, marked-up drawings for client records.

As the project was part of a wider kitchen refurbishment programme, close coordination with PSV Designs and university facilities staff was key to ensuring works aligned with construction schedules and site access requirements. Our team worked quickly, cleanly, and in full compliance with health and safety standards to avoid disruption to the university’s operations and student access areas.

All identified defects were fully remediated, certified, and signed off by Helix FMS. A complete Passive Fire Register was produced, providing a clear record of all penetrations treated and sealed, along with supporting photographic evidence.

The university now benefits from fire-stopped, compartmentalised kitchen spaces that meet required safety standards, supporting the safety and comfort of students long-term.

This project is another example of how Helix FMS supports live education environments with efficient, precise, and regulation-compliant passive fire protection. Our team works hand-in-hand with contractors, designers, and estates teams to deliver fire safety that’s practical, certified, and built to last.
