Tower Block Survey

Location: Hull Royal Infirmary

Client: Hull University Teaching NHS Trust

Sector: Healthcare

Services: Passive fire protection surveys

Project details

Helix FMS is proud to be supporting Hull University Teaching NHS Trust with an extensive, multi-phase passive fire protection survey programme at the 13-storey tower block of Hull Royal Infirmary.

This ongoing project plays a vital role in enhancing the fire safety infrastructure of one of the region’s busiest and most important hospitals, with a focus on minimal disruption, detailed reporting, and collaborative delivery.

The project involves conducting comprehensive floor-by-floor fire surveys across the hospital’s high-rise tower block. Each floor presents its own environment, layout, and clinical requirements. Therefore, it is essential our team remain agile, communicative, and responsive to each ward’s needs.

Our survey process includes identifying compromised fire compartmentation, documenting and photographing all issues, providing a detailed written report with prioritised remedial actions and marking all surveyed areas to ensure a full site-wide audit trail.

Operating in a live hospital setting brings unique challenges, from infection control and patient privacy to coordination with busy NHS teams. We’ve worked closely with ward managers, frontline clinical staff, estates and facilities teams to ensure surveys are completed quietly, safely, and without interfering with patient care. Communication and cooperation have been central to the project’s success.

Our findings are forming the basis of a targeted remedial action plan to upgrade passive fire protection systems across the building, including fire-stopping, fire door compliance, and compartmentation improvements.

The works have helped the Trust improve visibility of fire safety performance and prepare for compliance inspections with robust documentation. This project demonstrates Helix FMS’s strength in delivering large-scale fire safety programmes in sensitive, live environments, with precision, empathy, and accountability.

We’re proud to support Hull Royal Infirmary in creating a safer space for patients, staff, and visitors, and we look forward to completing the next phases of the tower block. Need expert fire surveys in a complex, high-risk environment? Get in touch for a free quote.
